Heresy (2024) Film Review

Very moody and atmospheric, with strong feminist undertones, this film feels very much like a music video or a video game cinematic. It's extremely stylish, and makes strong use of camerawork and imagery to convey an oppressive medieval Dutch village.
It suffers somewhat from the "medieval is brown" syndrome. I understand that may be a stylistic choice, but it will never draw anything but contempt from me, as it does a disservice to history.
I appreciate the 61-minute runtime, but it does feel a bit sparse in what it delivers. While the messaging is powerful, the narrative is thin: more a series of events than a real through-line. One major plot element never pays off, which made the ending a letdown.
A soft recommend for fans of folk horror and slow-burns looking for a visually stimulating period piece with a message, even if the delivery is a bit undercooked.
